Stage: Lugo-San Romao da Retorta
Here there are two options: either continue straight up (As Areeiras area), or turn right, parallel to the river and Club Fluvial sports centre, going past San Lázaro Chapel and the neighbourhood of the same name.
Lugo- San Vicente do Burgo
A short 18 km stretch. We will exit through the city walls, either via the Porta Miñá (or Porta do Carme), the oldest and most authentic archways in the city walls, or via the Porta de Santiago, in front of the neoclassical façade of the cathedral. We will continue down the path, following the track of a hidden Roman road, until we cross the River Miño, over a bridge that is also of Roman origin. We then arrive at the neighbourhood of A Ponte. Crossing the bridge, on the right, we continue walking along the river and the Club Fluvial sports facilities, as well as the San Lázaro chapel and neighbourhood
It is well worth taking a detour to visit the enigmatic Santalla de Bóveda Temple, a late Roman (4th century) structure listed as a national monument in 1931. Roman Road XIX ran past the temple, linking Bracara Augusta (Braga) with Lucus Augusti (Lugo) via Iria Flavia (Padrón). Back on the Way of St. James, we come to Bacurín, with Romanesque-style San Miguel Church, and the village of O Francés (also known as Hospital).
Lugo - San Vicente do Burgo
San Vicente do Burgo- San Romao da Retorta
Moving further away from Lugo, we come to San Vicente do Burgo, where there was once a pilgrim hospital. This section of the stage offers striking panoramic views of the city receding in the distance. The route continues through San Pedro de Mera and Guntín to San Romao da Retorta (municipality of Guntín), the end of this stage.
