Stage: Alto do Acebo-Paradavella
A lovely spot covered in snow during the harsh seasons and lush vegetation with sharp contrasts during the milder months. Fonfría and its freshwater spring are our first destination.
Alto do Acevo- Fonfría
The Primitive Route enters Galicia via the mountain pass at O Acevo (1,030 m). It is a lovely spot covered in snow during the harsh seasons and lush vegetation with sharp contrasts during the milder months. From here it is 171 km to Santiago. Fonfría and its freshwater spring are our first destination.
Alto do Acevo - Fonfría
Fonfría- Paradanova
This was home to a major pilgrim hospital located on land held by San Xoán de Paradanova, which was still operating at the start of the 20th century. We pass through Barbeitos and then Paradanova, where there are two alternatives: one running through San Xoán de Padrón and the other via A Proba de Burón.
Fonfría - Paradanova
Paradanova- A Proba de Burón
In Paradanova, next to the Santa Cruz chapel, the Jacobean route divides into two routes. One heads north, along the original route that goes to the Burón valley, and one heads straight, going up towards the municipal capital of A Fonsagrada.
From Paradanova, passing through Carballeira da Costa and the popular Fonte da Pousa, the primitive road enters A Proba de Burón. This was one of the most significant mediaeval centres on the road from Oviedo to Santiago de Galicia. The town was the capital of the Burón council until 1835, when it moved to A Fonsagrada.
Paradanova - San Xoan do Padrón
A Proba de Burón- Hospital de Montouto
When leaving A Proba de Burón, the route continues through the high peaks of O Muradal, beginning the descent after passing through the Old Hospital of Montouto, which marks the highest point of this route.
You can enter the Montouto Vello site, which is greatly significant in the Jacobean tradition, via the Pedra Labrada standing stone. Here the two alternative routes converge, one towards Burón and the other towards A Fonsagrada.
San Xoan do Padrón - Hospital de Montouto
Hospital de Montouto- Paradavella
From Montouto the route continues to the typical locality of Paradavella, noted for its pallozas, primitive rural dwellings.
