Frequently asked questions on the public network
The Servizo Galego de Saúde (Sergas - Galician Healthcare Service) has established a telephone number (881 002 021) for people who come to Galicia from elsewhere and present Covid-19 symptoms. You will receive precise instructions by phone.
They have informative posters on the main regulations and recommendations against Covid-19 and they have preventative measures such as gels and disinfectant solutions, pedal bins, gloves and more. In addition, the unused spaces will not be occupied and each hostel will have signs to promote social distancing in shared use areas, restricting the use of communal services.
Current legislation indicates that the use of a mask is obligatory in all closed spaces for public use or any spaces that are open to the public and in which people may find themselves in the same space as others. Use of a mask is always necessary in these cases, with the exception of cases in which you can remain seated and the hostel managers adopt measures that guarantee that social distancing can be maintained at all times. Therefore, the use of masks is mandatory in hostels except for in the aforementioned scenario. The aforementioned scenario also applies to lying in a bed. However, masks must be used in shared rooms, except when lying or sitting in bed.
Private hostels can use up to 75% of their capacity, while public hostels will maintain a maximum capacity of 50%, with the aim of promoting the reopening of private establishments that have been particularly affected by having remained closed for over three months.
Reservations can be made through the website https://alberguesxacobeo.gal which will not prevent pilgrims from requesting a place in person upon arrival at the hostel, as long as it has sufficient capacity. Pilgrims who wish to do so can reserve a bed from 1:00 p.m. the day before the stay to 1:00 p.m. on the night of the stay. From that time onwards, any free spaces that the hostel may have remaining will be available to pilgrims who arrive there with no reservation, thus making prior reservation compatible with the more traditional hospitality found on the Camino.
Yes. You will be provided with single-use bed linen. Once it is delivered to you, you must place it on the bed yourself. This ensures that no one, not even hostel employees, touch guests’ bedding. You must also remove the linen and leave it in the place indicated before leaving the hostel. Pilgrims will take care of their boots, backpacks and other items for personal use. If necessary, bags will be provided to store belongings.
After each day of use, the room and furniture are cleaned and disinfected. In the case of shared bedrooms, the beds are arranged in a way that ensures social distancing. To this end, a series of spaces that cannot be used have been labelled as out of order.
The capacity of each of the hostel's shared use spaces (rooms, toilets, dining room, etc.) is established in a way that allows people to maintain social distancing.
Public hostel kitchens in Galicia only have a fridge and a microwave, but at the moment these services remain closed. However, if necessary, individual requests will be fulfilled by the hostel owners, e.g. keeping medicine in the fridge.
In addition to frequent cleaning and disinfection, bathrooms have gel dispensers and paper for hand drying. In addition, the use of towels and any other shared use items is prohibited. There are also no rugs in the showers. Appropriate footwear for bathing areas should be used to avoid contact with the ground, thus minimising the risk of coming into contact with the virus and subsequently becoming infected.
Lifts, if hostels have them, should be used individually, except in the case of family units. In any case, it is recommended that guests use stairs if using the lift is not necessary. People who need assistance are lifts’ priority users.
