The Pilgrims’ Office will only admit its official credentials in order to issue the “Compostela”

Information note of the Metropolitan Chapter of the Cathedral of Santiago to the Associationsand other Institutions which issue credentials for the pilgrims who travel the Camino de Santiago:

“After extensive dialogue with many of the entities which issue Credentials and at the request of several of these, it is necessary to address a matter which is seriously damaging the image of the Camino and of the Pilgrimage.

The pastoral welcome, the careful attention and the cost free status must be the fundamental objectives of our presence on the Camino and at the goal of the Pilgrimage.

The Cathedral of Santiago has its own credential registered and this must be considered to be the only valid one and whose price for the pilgrim must not exceed 2 euros. The management of the credential cannot be carried out with commercial or profit making criteria. The revenue which might derive from this is necessarily limited by the model established and must always be beneficial to better service and attention for the pilgrims.

If a group or entity wishes to personalise this credential, it is possible to leave a blank space and, through an agreement with the Pilgrims’ Office a short text can be added which does not contradict, but, on the contrary, highlights the Christian sense of the Pilgrimage. The cathedral Office will be in charge of printing this.

In order to prevent any harm being done to those entities which are issuing credentials, they are granted an extension so that they can use these until April the first 2016. From then on, only the official credentials of the Pilgrims’ Office will be admitted for the issue of the "Compostela".

The foreign institutions will be regulated by a special agreement. All the other agreements and conventions will be evaluated, duly discussed with the parties concerned and action taken in consequence.”
