The Portuguese Coastal Way
Stage: Baiona-Vigo
This section of the route offers a number of lovely examples of vernacular architecture, the historic Galician country houses known as pazos and stone crosses such as those at Mallón and O Pereiro. It leads to Galicia’s largest city, bustling, industrial Vigo.
Baiona- A Ramallosa
We bid farewell to Baiona. On the way to the parish of Sabarís, the route passes the lovely historic O Pombal Fountain, then continues along Cristo Rei Street to Sabarís. Opposite the local market, it crosses a Romanesque bridge over the Groba River and continues past the Cadaval manor house to the lovely bridge at A Ramallosa, also Romanesque. It has ten arches and may have been built atop a Roman structure. It marks the start of the mouth of the Miñor River, an environmentally rich marshland.
Baiona - A Ramallosa
A Ramallosa- Nigrán
We enter the municipality of Nigrán. This section of the route offers a number of lovely examples of vernacular architecture, the historic Galician country houses known as pazos and stone crosses such as those at Mallón and O Pereiro. Panxón is home to the church known as Templo Votivo do Mar, the work of architect Antonio Palacios, and a Visigothic arch (8th century). This entire stage features lovely fine white sand beaches and a mild climate for most of the year.
We continue along Camiño do Souto and Camiño da Rosiña streets to the centre of Nigrán. After passing two country houses, Urzáiz and Cea, the route climbs up to Mount San Román, then down to Priegue, still in the municipality of Nigrán.
The C-550 road is a constant presence along this entire route. It leads into the municipality of Vigo, Galicia’s largest city–with close to 300,000 inhabitants and more than 500,000 in the entire metropolitan area. It is a major fishing and container port, a bustling, industrial city surrounded by lovely beaches and scenery.
A Ramallosa - Nigrán
Nigrán- Coruxo
Saiáns–with its magnificent beaches–marks the entrance to the municipality of Vigo. It is followed by the parishes of San Miguel de Oia and San Salvador de Coruxo.
Nigrán - Coruxo
Coruxo- Vigo
The route continues along Camiño de Muíños Street to Samil Beach. This sandy area is a gathering place and leisure spot for many Vigo residents. It offers a wide range of hotel facilities and services. The best way to reach the city from here is to follow the Lagares River, which flows into the sea at this spot. The river path provides an opportunity to enjoy the wetlands, flora and fauna. An alternative to this route–one more faithful to tradition, but now interrupted by large housing developments and heavy traffic–runs through the Coia neighbourhood to As Travesas.
