Robert A. Maxwell is Sherman Fairchild Associate Professor at the Institute of Fine Arts (New York University). His research focuses on the production and interpretation of imagery (900-1300), as well as theory and historiography. He is the author of several books: The Art of Medieval Urbanism: Parthenay in Romanesque Aquitaine, 2007; Representing History 900-1300: Art, Music, History, 2011; Current Directions in Eleventh- and Twelfth-Century Sculpture Studies (edited with Kirk Ambrose), 2011; and The Memory of Past Acts: Picturing Presence, Loss, and History in Illuminated Cartularies, 2025. His current research ranges from the temporality of dreams (2026), modes of deception and doubt in artistic production of the twelfth century (2020, 2025), the writings of Meyer Schapiro (2023), and includes long-term projects on the role of images in documentary culture.
