International Pilgrim Welcome Centre
The new location for welcoming pilgrims to their goal in Santiago is located in Rúa Carretas, number 33, a few short metres from Praza do Obradoiro. It houses all pilgrim services, including the Pilgrim's Office, where the Compostela is obtained.
The new International Pilgrim Welcome Centre in located in Rúa Carretas, number 33, in Santiago, occupying the building and grounds of a former nursing home just a few metres from Praza do Obradoiro.
The centre has been created for the purpose of welcoming pilgrims and providing them with a comfortable space to gather upon completing their journey. It will house the new Pilgrim's Office, where the Compostela can be obtained.
It occupies a large area, 3,600 m2, between Carretas and Domingo García-Sabell streets. The original building dates from the late 18th century and was established by Archbishop Bartolomé Rajoy. A large part of the structure has been refurbished and the green areas have also been redone.
The centre has been created for the purpose of welcoming pilgrims and providing them with a comfortable space to gather upon completing their journey.
It will house all of the services related to the Way of St. James, including the Pilgrim's Office, where pilgrims obtain the Compostela, the document that provides proof of their pilgrimage.
The International Pilgrim Welcome Centre has the following services: the already mentioned welcome office of the cathedral of Santiago; chapel and space for events, information point of the Way, space for Jacobean Associations, library and future documentation centre of The Way of St. James.
The centre will also have a social welfare space, as it will house workshops and rehabilitation room to be used by Cáritas Interparroquial.
Opening this centre has been made possible by a cooperation agreement between Turismo de Galicia and the Cathedral Foundation.
