Turismo de Galicia increases signposting on the Winter Route
- A total of 140 milestones will be placed along the route in our autonomous community
A Rúa (Ourense), 12 April 2017
Turismo de Galicia Director Nava Castro and Xacobeo Manager Rafael Sánchez, accompanied by the regional secretary of the Xunta in Ourense, Silvia Dorado, attended the placement of a milestone on the Winter Route in the Ourense town of A Rúa. This action falls under a mutual agreement with the municipalities on the Way of St. James to reinforce existing signage.
‘It is essential to ensure the protection and preservation of this pilgrimage route, making it crucial to focus on signposting in order to guarantee the safety of pilgrims and facilitate their pilgrimage,’ Nava Castro explained. The director of Turismo de Galicia mentioned that this route is still awaiting official delimitation by the Directorate-General for Heritage of the Xunta de Galicia. As a result, this action will reinforce existing signage along the Camino, on a provisional basis. This route extends more than 200 km, running through four Galician provinces and historic districts with a wealth of personality and attractions, including Valdeorras, Ribeira Sacra and Deza.
140 milestones
Nava Castro stated that Turismo de Galicia is placing signposts to reinforce existing signage in the municipalities of Rubiá, Carballeda de Valdeorras, O Barco de Valdeorras, Vilamartín de Valdeorras and A Rúa, in the province of Ourense; Quiroga, A Pobra de Brollón, Monforte de Lemos, Pantón, O Saviñao, Chantada and Sober, in the province of Lugo; and Rodeiro and Lalín, in the province of Pontevedra.
‘140 milestones will be placed in a total of 14 municipalities, reinforcing their signage. This is another example of the firm commitment of the Xunta de Galicia to this newly recognized official pilgrimage route,’ indicated Nava Castro.
On this subject and in relation to ongoing improvement work on the Camino, Nava Castro made mention of the Way of St. James Master and Strategic Plan as one of the key documents in the area of tourism development in Galicia. She assured those in attendance that thanks to this plan, work is moving forward on organizing, regulating and enhancing one of Galicia’s greatest symbols, the pilgrimage routes to Santiago, looking ahead to Holy Year 2021.
