The Way of Sant James

An interesting aspect of the feast days of San Froilán, which have been held ever since 1754, is the great pull they have on the rest of Galicia. In fact, over the two weekends they cover, Lugo becomes the epicentre of social life in Galicia, with what are widely held to be the finest autumn celebrations in the whole of Galicia.

One of the main days is the second Sunday, dubbed “O Domingo das Mozas”, which is a celebration of traditional dress and Galician folklore.

The squares of the old town bustle with activities: parades of cabezudo giants, charanga marching bands, street markets, and magic and juggling shows on the days of the feasts. The festivities end with a medieval fair in the Cathedral square and the area around the Roman walls. In the evening a large fireworks display brings the celebrations to a close.

Children get their own special moment with San Froilanciño, a set of activities including traditional games, chess tournaments, and theatre and puppet shows.
