Verín is the municipal capital of a beautiful valley in the upper basin of the River Támega. It is the most important town in the south of the province of Ourense and has significant monumental riches. Beside the Castle of Monterrei, there is an important crossroads of Caminos de Santiago coming from the Vía de la Plata or from Portugal, which enter Galicia through Soutochao and Feces de Abaixo.
Two kilometres from Verín stands the Castle of Monterrei, a magnificent monumental complex with a triple walled enclosure. The Camino passes near to it. The Castle stands on the ancient fortified settlement of Verín and Baronceli, where pre-Roman remains were found and it appears that there was a fortified settlement there.
