Description
The festivities of Santo Cristo de Fisterra take place during Holy Week, with stagings of the Passion of Christ by a group of residents of the town who are followed by thousands of parishioners, in the surroundings of the church of Santa María das Areas, on the road that goes up to the lighthouse. The most important of these is the one that takes place on Easter Sunday. It is a sacramental act which recounts the moment when, in front of the tomb of Christ guarded by Roman soldiers, an angel notifies the women of the news of Jesus’ resurrection. Between the manifestations of joy and happiness and the hallelujahs sung by the thousands of attendees, the bells ring and music is played, and fireworks and doves are launched in flight. As the finishing act, the "Danza de Nosa Señora das Areas” dance takes place, whose origin dates back to the 17th century.
