Description
The Collegiate Church of Santa María de Sar is an ancient convent originally established for regular canons of St. Augustine. It was founded by Diego Xelmírez in 1136 and served as a sanctuary for canons who wished to live under the rule of St. Augustine while retaining their privileges in the cathedral. In 1548, it was secularised and became a collegiate church. Today, it is a parish under the Diocese of Santiago. The medieval period is represented by the church and the northern side of the cloister. The church is an important example of Romanesque architecture from Santiago, with a basilica plan featuring three naves, the central one being wider than the side ones.
