Santiago de Compostela, June 1, 2017
The President of the Government of Galicia, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, today called upon the Order of the Camino de Santiago and the Academia Xacobea to be active guardians of Europeanism. “The ideals of our civic culture are not defended alone. It is necessary to constantly nourish and protect them”, he said, reminding those attending that the political and economic Europe has always to be accompanied by civic, cultural and spiritual Europe.
Along these same lines, he stated that it was not a question of rejecting the unease, the concern and fear when these are real, but of defending the thesis that democracy and Europe are and always will be the solution.
During the act of the Academia Xacobea, Feijóo extended this petition to the new academicians: Juan Viaño, “who is the Rector of one of the most ancient Universities of Europe”; Víctor Manuel Vázquez Portomeñe “who renewed the Camino with the Xacobeo 93, modernizing it and making it attractive for different cultures”; Eduardo López Pereira, “who we owe the dissemination of unknown aspects of the Codex Calixtinus, and the successive attempts take it away, sometimes for reasons of morality and other times for pure greed”; Jesús de Juana, “one of the most knowledgeable persons of contemporary history and the particularity of Galicia”; Xavier Añoveros Trias de Bes, “for serving as a link between Galicia and Catalonia”, and Ulises Bértolo “who has gifted us orthodoxies in the form of novels which extolls the Camino”.
The President of the Government of Galicia concluded by expressing the wish that Galicia which was one of the sources of Europeanism will know how to contribute to its resurgence. “The Europe of today was the dream of those pilgrims and we must continue to make this a reality”.
