The acting President of the Xunta de Galicia announced the humanization of the entry into of the Caminos de Santiago in order to make progress in the touristic excellence of Santiago with regard to the next Holy Year

Today, after the meeting of the Council of the Xunta, the President of the acting Government of Galicia, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, announced the humanization of the entry into Compostela of the Caminos de Santiago in order to make progress in the touristic excellence of the capital of Galicia as regards the next Holy Year. On this matter, he pointed out that the objective is that the 2021 Xacobeo also be historical and reminded everyone that the autonomous executive is taking advantage of this period of eleven years in order to boost the Camino.

This morning, Feijóo provided advance information on the proposals for action regarding the landscape integration of the Caminos in the capital of Galicia; a subject pending, as he pointed out, stressing as an example that in the French Way the pilgrims feel disoriented on crossing the Bridge of San Lázaro arriving at the crossroads of Lugo and Concheiros.

The acting Head of the Autonomous Government Explained that this study is based on field work along the French, Portuguese, English, Vía de la Plata and Fisterra Ways, together with several previous analyses.

Along the same lines, he specified that the analysis of the natural environment is based on two documents: the study on environmental sustainability, the territorial and landscape impact of the PGOM (Organisation of Town Planning) of Santiago and the study of a green strategy for Santiago de Compostela of the Consortium, with special attention given to ugly features. And also to study the PGOM of 2008 in order to analyse the town planning.

In addition, the heritage and ethnographic criteria based on the Law on the Protection of the Camino de Santiago and on the declarations as BIC (Cultural Interest Site) and World heritage Site, as well as socio-economic aspects such as the risk of massification  of the Camino de Santiago.

The action proposed
The person responsible for the Autonomous Executive specified that, as a consequence of this analysis, three zones were identified for specific proposals. In more detail, he stressed that, on the English Way, at the entrance to the Polígono del Tambre (Tambre Industrial Estate), it is proposed to create a pilgrimage path from the start of the Industrial Estate too the Calle de las Mulas, designed not to interrupt the use of the Estate.

On the French Way, between the final stretch of the Calle del Gozo and San Lázaro, it is proposed to replace the stone stairway with a walkway. Moreover, at the entrance to the Calle de los Concheiros, alternatives are proposed  for two problems: in order to annul the negative impact of the rear facades of the Calle del Home Santo, it is proposed to plant trees and improve the facades; and, in order to alleviate the intense traffic at the intersection of the Avenida de Lugo, Concheiros and Rodríguez de Viguri, it is proposed to create new parking spaces.
