Santiago de Compostela, 16 December 2019
The President of the Galician Government, Alberto Núñez Feijoo, guaranteed Galcians and visitors 10 activities a day across 313 places to celebrate the Xacobeo and showcase the best ofGalicia over the next two years. "Throughout 2020 and 2021, Galicia will live through the first 700 days of the 5,000 days of the Jacobean decade ahead," he said, highlighting that the progress programming the Xacobeo 2021, presented this morning, already has resources, is established, decentralised and complete.
Under the predicted attendance of over 7 million people to all the events, Feijóo asserted that, although the central location for events will be Santiago, there will be another 312 places hosting events throughout the Community, with over 180 projects, including more than 7,000 activities, being launched.
"We can see that Galicians have been fully involved in preparing the 5,000 day Jacobean celebration," stated Feijóo during the Organising Committee meeting, which continues the meeting that took place in July. There, he thanked the Catholic Church (particularly the Archbishopric of Santiago), the City Council, the group of municipalities represented by the FEGAMP, the rest of the State represented by the Government Delegation, and all the agents involved in the work they are doing for the Xacobeo 2021. He asked these groups to ensure "that this relationship continues".
Feijóo asserted that the document presented is active and subject to modifications and additions, "because we are continuing to work on it; because we are waiting for answers from the central Government, waiting for what the real involvement will be after a takeover; and because we have the active participation of the provincial councils and local councils, which, once I present them this plan, I’m sure will unite and begin proposing changes," he explained.
A Xacobeo for all, with all and throughout Galicia
To create a Xacobeo 2021 for all, with all and throughout Galicia, the head of the Autonomous Executive stated that the goal is to "cover the whole of Galicia, that there are activities throughout Galicia and that the acts are numerous in content".
In line with this, he referred to the implementation of numerous initiatives that demonstrate the Xunta de Galicia’s commitment to this, such as: the O teu Xacobeo programme, thanks to which Galicians are implementing hundreds of artistic, cultural, social and innovative projects throughout the Community, with the help of 8 million euros; or Son do Way, "which is among the four most important festivals in Spain and has only occurred twice so far" he said, the latter festival taking place at Monte del Gozo. This event is already established and surrounded by other events that make up Fest Galicia in the summer, all of which establishes our region as a destination for music.
On the other hand, and in order to boost the international promotion of the Xacobeo, Feijóo highlighted the 3Ways (3Camiños) project, a fiction series that will be shot in 3 continents and 5 countries. The plot focuses on a group of young people who, at a crucial moment in their lives, decide to embark on the Way of Saint James. The series will be distributed internationally, with an expected audience of 5 million viewers.
"This will be explicitly promoted in Dublin, Portugal and Rome", he said, adding that a Tourist Promotion Office would be opened in the Italian capital next year.
Three large exhibitions, Xacobeo Cities, Xacobeo on the Way
On the other hand, a total of three large exhibitions will illustrate the Holy Year from a never-before-seen perspective. The first of these, Galicia, a story in the world, is already underway and is the most visited exhibition in the history of the Cidade da Cultura. From May to December next year, the Galicia from Nós to Us exhibition will open, celebrating the centenary of the formation of the Xeracion Nós and Nós Magazine, along with other events throughout 2020. Meanwhile, the Future Galicia exhibition will take place from April to September 2021, with a reflection on the future of the Autonomous Community, taking into account social, economic and cultural rights.
In terms of literary publishing, two publications under the title of The Cathedral of Santiago: an integral vision. The restoration and conservation of the Cathedral 2011-2027 (La Catedral de Santiago: una visión integral. La restauración y conservación de la Catedral 2011-2027) are alraedy underway. These texts make the fascinating history of the Cathedral known to the public, from the start of its construction up to the modern day, telling the story of outstanding specialists.
Another initiative to make sure the Xacobeo 2021 is for all and with all, the Xacobeo Cities project will be implemented, with music, performing arts and exhibitions organised in collaboration with the municipalities of A Coruña, Ferrol, Lugo, Ourense, Vigo and Pontevedra, and with a programme that covers 120 activities and already expects the attendance of over 300,000 people.
In the same spirit, the Xacobeo on the Way will be organised, visiting the region’s main houses and hubs; about 76 municipalities with over 1,400 activities. "It will be a miniature Son do Camiño, with performances that will last for two or three days in each municipality. In this case, the artists will be exclusively Galician," he explained. This project aims to reach 400,000 people.
A sustainable Way of Saint James that respects the environment
After mentioning other initiatives such as the Improvement plan for tourist accommodation or the Elige Galicia programme, as supported by domestic tourism, the president of the Xunta guaranteed that the Way of Saint James and the Jacobean Holy Year will be linked to sustainability, ecology and respect for the environment.
Thus, to create a zero impact Way, all cultural programming will take into account the principle of sustainability; measures such as the reuse and recycling of plastics will be applied, the use of renewable energies will be increased, spaces with native species will be reforested and various initiatives for the embellishment of the landscape and the environment will be developed.
"In addition, accessibility will be improved to make the Way inclsuive, the work of volunteers in multiple facets will be promoted and specific rehabilitation projects for cultural and ethnographic assets will be promoted", he said.
Finally, as part of the commitment to a Way based on values and universality, further initiatives include the organisation of forums for dialogue with world leaders, congresses and international academic conferences, site visits relating to Galicia and meetings with significant institutional representatives in the Autonomous Community.
"We have to continue working. This project is very ambitious; doing 10 activities a day means that the Xacobeo will be present throughout Galicia," concluded Feijóo, also stating that each place where the Compostela is sealed, "must have a Xacobeo programme".
