  • He highlights the upcoming Holy Year as an opportunity to showcase our potential in the religious, cultural and tourism sectors, but also in the economic and social spheres.
  • The diversity of the Plan stands out, with contributions from more than 600 people, entities, political organisations and pilgrims behind it.
  • For the Xacobeo 2021, and in the following 2027 and 2032, our land must be more Galicia Calidade than ever.

Santiago de Compostela, 19 July 2019

The President of the Galician Government, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, called today for the involvement of society as a whole to ensure that Xacobeo 2021 increases Galicia's Gross Domestic Product by 0.9% and creates 11,500 full-time jobs in the next four years, from today until 2022, the last exercise that will be directly influenced by the Holy Year.

He did it during the presentation of the Strategic Plan for the Xacobeo 2021 before members of the Church, mayors of the more than 120 municipalities through which the roads run, Jacobean and cultural associations and tourism managers, a broad representation of Galicia which, as he said, "we want to show that to organise the best Xacobeo of the best Galicia requires the commitment of all". “We are clear that the Xacobeo belongs to everyone. Galicians have the right to live the Xacobeo, to enjoy it, but we also have the duty to prepare it, to enrich it, each one from their respective individual or collective responsibilities", he said.

Thus, he highlighted the diversity of this road map, which has contributions from more than 600 people, entities, political organisations and pilgrims, he emphasises "that all the work done by the Galicians for the Xacobeo does not end here, it is only the beginning". For this reason, he called for the involvement of Galician, Spanish and European society as a whole so that Galicia can show in the Xacobeo 2021 all its potential and capacities not only in the cultural, tourist and religious sectors, but also in the economic and social spheres.

In the same vein, Feijóo stressed the importance of the roles that each person or entity has so that the land seen in the Xacobeo 2021, and in the following 2027 and 2032, is "more Galicia Calidade than ever”, he also expressed his desire that the entire Community be the welcoming home for those who visit Galicia.

In the same way, he assured that the 5,000-day Xacobeo "demands that we give the best of ourselves to each of them" and invited all Galicians to take advantage of the Jacobean Galicia of the next decade to delve into the areas marked as priority: a green, young, friendly and innovative Galicia.
Galicia, in the best moment for the celebration of the Holy Years

During his speech, the president of the Xunta said that "there is no doubt that taking advantage of the following Holy Years as a platform to show Galicia what we want to be in the next decade is an ambitious goal", but assured that "we have the advantage of time, which will allow us to do it with the proper preparation".

In this regard, he explained that the difference of Xacobeo 2010, "we have been preparing this event for years, and with even more intensity now, with this Strategic Plan as a roadmap, still a year and a half away from opening the Holy Door ". "Of course, in the Xunta we have already carried out important initiatives, which I believe place us in the best situation with respect to any other previous Holy Year", he added, affirming that Galicia is in a better situation because the pilgrim event is in its best moment, there are 20% more pilgrims than in 2010, of which 65% are international and 35% national, and the barrier of 300,000 pilgrims was surpassed, and because "we laid the foundations to show ourselves to the world in the best conditions" .

More in detail, he explained that today there are more recognised routes, the Winter Way and the Portuguese Coastal Way were officially incorporated; the roads are now more diversified, which means that they do not fall into a massification which could compromise the experience; the Cathedral was the object of the greatest rehabilitation in its history, to which is added the restoration of the Portico de la Gloria; the greater landscape recovery of the more than 1,500 kilometres of the Caminos de Santiago is being undertaken; the new Pilgrim Reception Centre gives a better welcome to the pilgrims who gather in Compostela; the improvement of the Monte del Gozo facilities is about to be completed; there are 12 more hostels in the autonomic network than in the Xacobeo 2010; and events like the festival O Son do Camiño are consolidated and are an example of the festive programme which extends throughout Galicia.

The budget is tripled with respect to Xacobeo 2010

With the aim of continuing to prepare Galicia to be at its best, the president recalled, as already announced in recent days, that the Xacobeo 2021 Strategic Plan guarantees with sufficient resources that commitment of the Xunta, which incorporates a minimum of 247 million of euros for the next few years, this means tripling the budgetary effort dedicated to the previous Xacobeo. In any case, he stressed that it is an amount that he hopes can be increased "once the political scenario is cleared at the national level", that is, that is, that the central government can agree on the scope and content of commitments it has made.

The most participative Xacobeo to achieve the best results

Feijóo advocated to achieve this administrative unit, of the Xunta, the city councils and the central government, because "it will be the best example for Galician men and women". Following this line of thought, he gave as an example the results of the call O teu Xacobeo, that reveal a Galicia with ideas and the desire that the next Holy Year “will be the best also because it will be the most participatory," he said, emphasising that "this is how it should be because each grain that is contributed will count to be able to achieve the best results”.

"We have a lot in favour, but we need to work together, we must give the best of ourselves to be able to make the Xacobeo have an ambitious economic impact," he concluded, and also mentioned the desire to surpass the 9.3 million visitors of the previous Xacobeo.

Finally, the president of the Xunta highlighted that the pilgrim phenomenon allows Galicia to show a multifaceted vision of the world, with a great capacity to understand diversity. "Defending Xacobeo should also force us to become promoters of that diversity, which is as contrary to the isolationist temptations as the others that seek to blur the personality of each territory," he said.
