Santiago de Compostela, 13 November 2018
The Head of the Department of Culture and Tourism, Román Rodríguez, chaired today the meeting of the Executive Committee of the Organising Committee of Xacobeo 2021, made up of representatives from different departments of the Regional Government, the Church and the City Council of Santiago de Compostela. The meeting, which gives continuity to the work begun in the Plenary of the Committee, made it possible to agree on the definition of the strategic lines for the next Holy Year, prior to the drafting of the Strategic Plan for Xacobeo 2021.
These strategic lines should pursue the general objective of strengthening and updating the Galician brand, reinforcing the international projection of our country, promoting the renewal of the Galician offer and consolidating Galicia as a unique destination and a cultural and tourist reference.
The Executive Committee of Xacobeo 2021 reported on the latest decisions adopted at the national level in the Jacobean Council, in which Galicia played a prominent role. In this sense, the head of the Department announced that this Thursday the Government Council will address the concretions of the program of tax benefits in Galicia for the sponsors of this event. The Jacobean Council has already authorised the deductions, which can be applied over the next three years.
Sharing and cross-cutting project
Understood as a true transforming tool, Román Rodríguez opted for an ideal planning and participation around Xacobeo 2021, taking into account its cross-cutting nature and sustainability as a premise. In this regard, he recalled that the Organising Committee of Xacobeo 21 is part of a solid architecture that leaves no room for improvisation and is shared between society and the main institutions of the country.
To broaden the scope of this celebration and his willingness to participate, he said that among the initiatives planned for 2019 will be O teu Xacobeo, a call for projects open to all citizens, endowed with 2 million euros, which will allow any person or entity to propose projects of interest in the areas of culture, social or sports, among others.
In parallel, as detailed by the commissioner of Xacobeo 2021, Cecilia Pereira, the restoration of the ethnological heritage of the Camino de Santiago will be promoted, thus contributing to the conservation of this important legacy, making it available to Galicians as well as to pilgrims and tourists in general. In the same way, the actions of cultural promotion and dynamisation will be continued in collaboration with the own resources of the Autonomous Community.
Four axes of action
The Executive Committee of the Organising Committee for Xacobeo 2021, which has eight members, also reported on the approval of the plans and programmes for the commemoration of the Holy Year by the Jacobean Council, which incorporated all the contributions from Galicia.
This last body, which brings together the different ministries and Autonomous Communities, agreed on five priority objectives for this celebration, common to all participating administrations. These include highlighting the natural and human cultural wealth of the Camino de Santiago; inviting dialogue around this Great European Cultural Itinerary; promoting the Jacobean cultural heritage as a source of inspiration for contemporary artistic creation; encouraging the development of the rural areas of the Camino de Santiago and fostering knowledge of the heritage related to the Jacobean Route, particularly among the youngest.
On this basis, the plans and programs will be articulated in four axes: plan of cultural dynamisation, plan of tourist dynamisation and reception of visitors, plan of investigation and plan of heritage and legacy. When including an activity among these programmes, it will be especially valued the relationship between the activity and the Camino de Santiago, the originality, rigour and relevance of its contribution to the aims of the commemoration and its economic feasibility.
Article 10 of Decree 4/2018, of 11 January, which created the Organising Committee for Xacobeo 2021, states that it will operate through the Plenary and the Executive Committee, which met today at the International Pilgrim Reception Centre.
The functioning of the Executive Committee is determined by article 9, which entrusts it "in general, with the carrying out of functions of proposal, preparation and development of specific actions in the terms defined by the Organising Committee".
