The Northern Way

Stage: Abadín-Vilalba

  • Length 20.6 Km
  • Difficulty Medium
  • Estimated Duration 5h 10min

This section of the route takes us through wetlands – such as those after As Chouzas – and past charming examples of vernacular and religious architecture: country houses, stone crosses and stone washing places.

Abadín- Martiñán

  • Length 8.9 Km
  • Difficulty Medium
  • Estimated Duration 2h 15min

This 20-km stage is completely flat. As mentioned in the previous stage, this district is known as A Terra Chá, a vast plain (the largest in Galicia, together with the district of A Limia in Ourense) encompassing several municipalities in the province of Lugo. In 2003, this region and the upper section of the Miño River were declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve under the name Terras do Miño.

After Abadín, the route runs through the parishes of San Xoán Castromaior and San Bartolomeu de Corvelle, in the municipality of Vilalba. We then cross the Arnela River via a medieval bridge. Pontevella brings another medieval bridge over the Batán River, this one with three magnificent arches. We have reached Martiñán.

Martiñán- Goiriz

  • Length 6.3 Km
  • Difficulty Medium
  • Estimated Duration 1h 35min

After leaving Martiñán, we come to Goiriz. This section of the route takes us through wetlands – such as those after As Chouzas – and past charming examples of vernacular and religious architecture: country houses, stone crosses and stone washing places.
